As MountCrest seeks to become the first private university in Ghana to offer medical training which is scheduled to begin next January,  the agreement with Penn State will also make the MCU a pacesetter in that aspect of medical training.

The Founder and Rector of   MCU, Mr Kwaku Ansa-Asare, who led a two-member delegation from MountCrest to sign the agreement, told the Daily Graphic after returning home that it was a good initiative.

Humanism in medical training

Penn State College of Medicine is the first medical school in the US to establish a humanity department with the view to training doctors and clinicians to employ humanism in their medical practice.

The collaboration with MountCrest is, therefore, expected to help shape the attitude of a generation of doctors in Ghana to impact positively on health care in the country.

Mr Ansa-Asare said the initiative by MountCrest was based on the dearth of humanism in medical practice in Ghana and the need to imbue medical trainees with such discipline.

Exchange of visits

The signing of the agreement was the outcome of exchange of visits between officials of MountCrest and Penn State to Ghana and the US to hold preliminary discussions and ascertain other respective interests.

A delegation from the MCU had first visited the US to learn about how Penn State incorporates humanism into its medical training curriculum.

After that visit, a four-member delegation from Penn State also made a follow-up trip to Ghana to apprise themselves of preparations being made by the MCU to roll out its medical programme.

Members of the delegation were the Director of the Global Health Centre at Penn State College of Medicine, Prof. N. Benjamin Fredrick; the Vice Dean for Educational Affairs, Prof. Therese M. Wolpaw; the Vice Chair for Educational Affairs and Director, Kienle Centre for Humanistic Medicine, Prof. Daniel R. Wolpaw, and the Associate Director, Master of Public Health Programme,Prof.  Wenke Hwang.
