Motivate students to study Mathematics - Anku

The Executive Director of Meagasa Mathematics Academy, Professor Sitsofe E. Anku, has called on stakeholders in the educational sector to make Mathematics relevant and meaningful in schools.

At the 10th Ghana Mathematics Camp (GMC) held in Accra last Monday, he said students had to be motivated to study Mathematics and understand the relevance of the subject in every aspect of their lives, especially in academics.

Mathematics failure

“The failures in Mathematics among students are overwhelming and a lot can be done about the situation,” he said.

Prof.  Anku noted that the only way to get the required improvement was through activity-based Mathematics method of learning instead of the usual theoretical method which made it boring and difficult for the students to understand.

He added that the reason for the GMC was to help students improve on their Mathematics during vacations and get good results during their general examinations such as the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

“We talk a lot about Maths and its failures, yet nothing is done about it. This year, there were about 57,000 failures in Mathematics in the WASSCE but we think it’s an improvement over last year’s 90,000 failures. No, it is not an improvement, the situation must be changed,” he added.

Maths Camp

Explaining the purpose of the camp, Prof. Anku said, it was to help the students develop an interest in Mathematics and also stay committed to the subject by making it more fun and activity-based.

He said there were some challenges facing the academy, such as funding, because most parents wanted their children to participate in the Maths camp but payment of the fee became an issue.

“GETFUND has been of great help to us, if not, we would not have been able to run this programme successfully. Though some parents and organisations have pledged to help us at the end of the three-week stay, getting the money becomes a problem,” he said.
