The mother of a Class Two pupil of Kaajanor Primary School in the La Dadekotopon Municipality, Madam Bernice Edifor Addo, made her son, Master Leon Addo, proud when she won a GH¢500 scholarship to pay his school fees and other educational expenses for the next academic year.

The scholarship formed part of a competition on nutritional knowledge, organised by  Nestlé Nido Milk Powder, a brand of  Nestlé Ghana, for mothers of pupils from selected schools in the municipality.

Madam Addo, after battling it out in a quiz with seven other mothers, came first and was presented with a GH¢500 post-dated cheque to be cashed in September when schools reopen, and a hamper of Nido milk powder, as well as Nido-branded souvenirs.

In a message, the Managing Director of Nestle Ghana, Mrs Freda Y. Duplan, said the Nestlé Nido Nutrition Education Campaign provided mothers and caregivers with some education on good nutrition for the optimal growth of their children.

The programme, she said, was being run in selected schools nationwide, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Mrs Duplan, whose speech was read on her behalf by the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager of  Nestlé Ghana, Mr Aaron Fenu, said education played an important role in promoting good nutrition and healthy lifestyles that contributed to the development of families, especially children, stressing that the campaign formed part of the company’s nutrition, health and wellness agenda.

Methodology of the campaign

Giving an overview of the campaign, she said mothers were offered the opportunity to learn about good nutrition through drama, interactive games and practical lessons.

After that, a contest is organised during each event and an ultimate scholarship package given to the mother or caregiver and child.

The prize package is to provide financial support for the next academic term, when school reopens, usually in September.

She said the questions were normally on balanced diets, the importance of breakfast to school-age children, health benefits of the right amount of micronutrients such as iron, calcium and vitamins.

The Category Development Manager, Nido, Mr Samuel Adjei-Yeboah, in an interview, said the competition formed part of Nestlé Nido’s nutritional education campaign which had been organised in eight regions.

So far, he said, 40 mothers had won GH¢500 each in the competition for their children since it began in 2015.
