MOBA urged to help develop alma mater

Ebusuapanyin of Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA), Captain Paul Forjoe, has called on the old boys of the school to pay their dues and help develop their alma mater. He said currently some projects in the school had been put on hold because of the challenges confronting some year groups, in relation to paying their quota towards the development of the school.

Capt. Forjoe, who made this known at the school’s Second Annual National Conference held in Accra last Saturday, said, “Though our school is the oldest secondary education institution in the country, and has a strong old boys’ association, there are still some challenges that face the school.”

He said the contribution of MOBA towards the development of the school could not be downplayed as members were very passionate about their school and had over the years consistently demonstrated their spirits of collective and collaborative will towards their alma mater.

Keeping the brand

Capt. Forjoe mentioned that the school had a history replete with very interesting nerve-racking stories of survival against all odds, pointing out that it was in that spirit that Article 54 of the MOBA Regulations mandates the MOBA National Executive Committee (NEC) to organise an Annual MOBA conference with the agenda of receiving reports, raising funds and any other matter related to the school.

“It is also intended to bring together Old Boys to deliberate on matters concerning both the school and MOBA as an association,” he said.

He urged the Old Boys to help keep the MOBA brand because it was a gift from God and was, therefore, their responsibility to nurture and keep it strong because they had the numbers, the brains, their pride and time-tested traditions.

Challenges

A report from the current Headmaster of the school, Mr Manfred Oduro, who is also an old student of the school, indicated that the students’ population was increasing; hence there was a lot of pressure on the few facilities in the school, and as such, the school needed additional dormitories and other amenities.

He said though some year groups were expanding the dining hall, the project had to be halted due to lack of funds, and for that reason, the students had to take their meals in three batches and according to their forms.

“Some students have taken advantage of the situation to misbehave because there is no tag to show their forms. They walk around the compound on the pretext of going to eat and it’s affecting classes hours,” he explained.

Mr Oduro also complained about the lack of accommodation for some members of staff, saying they had to commute from nearby towns to school, which sometimes delayed classes.

He commended the Old Boys for furnishing the staff duplex, but said it was not enough to accommodate all of them because the staff strength was increasing in number.

The Mfantsipim old boys’ Association (MOBA) was inaugurated in 1947 in line with efforts by the old boys to organise themselves in a formidable group to give back to their alma mater. They have branches in parts of the country and overseas.
