Ministry to crack the whip on recalcitrant heads

A deputy minister of Education, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah, has reiterated the need for heads of senior high schools to collect the government’s approved fees to avoid punishment.

He stressed that the recent sanctioning of some recalcitrant headmasters in the Ashanti Region should serve as a warning to others who were still collecting unapproved fees.

According to the deputy minister, his outfit had compiled a list of other headmasters who defied the directives of the ministry and would sanction them soon to deter others from exploiting parents.

Mr Okudzeto Ablakwah made the call at the golden jubilee celebration of the Asamankese Senior High School (ASASCO) at Asamankese in the Eastern Region.

Touching on the allowances for teacher trainees, he emphasised that the abolition of allowances was to allow the students of colleges of education to access loans from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

Mr Okudzeto Ablakwah stated that money saved by the government from the teacher trainee allowances would be used to improve infrastructure and other needs of the colleges of education.

The deputy minister inaugurated a golden jubilee legacy eight-unit classroom block valued at GH¢220,000, funded by the school with internally generated funds.

A deputy minister of Local Government, Mr Mohammed Ahmed Baba Jamal, gave the assurance that the deplorable Nsawam-Asamankese main road would be rehabilitated before the end of 2016.

The Headmaster of ASASCO, Mr Sampson Afrifah, in his report, said the school, which started as a private community-based educational institution in 1963 with 18 students, currently had a student population of 2,321 and 166 teaching and non-teaching staff.

The Guest Speaker, Prof. Olivia Frimpong Kwapong of the Institute of Continuing Education, University of Ghana, Legon, advised the students to commit themselves to the service of God in order to achieve academic laurels in life.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Akyem, Mr George Mensah Akpalu, gave the assurance that the assembly would construct a 12–classroom block and an administration block for the school and also rehabilitate the 1.3-kilometre road connecting the institution to the Asamankese town.
