Ministry launches book to create awareness of energy conservation

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has launched a book as part of efforts to create awareness of energy conservation among the youth in the country.

The 25-page book, written mainly for use by students at the senior high school (SHS) level, gives tips on the need and methods of energy efficiency and conservation in the home, school and workplace.

The book, titled “Your Guide to Energy Conservation: Save energy, save money, save the environment,”  was launched by the sector minister, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, at the Labone SHS in Accra last Monday, and 2000 copies of the book were presented to the students.

Additionally, 50 pieces of solar lamps were presented to the teachers of the school to help conserve energy.

Generation capacities

Addressing the function, Mr Buah said the ministry was doing its best to increase the energy generation capacity of the nation.

He, however, indicated that the best way of making energy readily available for daily use was energy conservation.

According to him, by practising energy efficiency and conservation, consumers would pay less for services provided.

He added that by inculcating in the youth the need for energy conservation, they would grow up with such an attitude.

Save a watt campaign

Mr Buah also stated that the energy conservation initiative was to complement the “Save the watt campaign” launched by the ministry and the Energy Commission early this year.

Under the campaign, Ghanaians were encouraged to manage the use of their electrical appliances efficiently, by switching off unused ones and using energy-efficient appliances.

As part of the programme, students from the Medie M/A JHS, on the Accra-Nsawam road, staged a performance on energy conservation to serve as in lesson for the students.

Energy saving tips by ECG

• According to the ECG, electricity users must replace aging inefficient appliances, especially when they need major repairs, with the most energy-efficient models.

• Air-condition users should reduce air-conditioning costs by cleaning or replacing the filter once a month.

• Electricity users should ensure that thermostats for appliances are effective and set at moderate levels.

• They must use energy saving settings on refrigerators/freezers, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes washers and clothes dryers.
