Ministerial team inspects sites for construction of SHSs

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, and a team of officers from the Ministry of Education(MoE) led by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Enoch Cobbinah, and technical officers last Tuesday inspected all the sites in the eight districts earmarked for the construction of the community day senior high schools in the region by the government.

The districts have been selected to benefit from the first phase of the construction of 50 community senior high schools,  which is in fulfilment of a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama in the 2012 electioneering  to construct 200 senior high schools in the next four years.

The beneficiary districts are Awutu Senya East Municipal, Awutu Senya  Agona East, Agona West and Gomoa East. The rest are Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem  Upper Denkyira East and Upper Denkyira West.

Accompanying the delegation were the District Chief Executives (DCEs) for the beneficiary districts in the persons of Dr Nuhu Adams,  Mr Sampson Abbey Armah, Mr Martin Luther Obeng, Mr Samuel Oppong,  Mr Isaac Kingsley Ahunu-Armah,and others.

The objective of the visit was to ensure that the various lands released had been properly acquired and legally documented to pave the way for the smooth take-off of the projects and to prevent any land disputes when the project commenced.

The Chief Director of the MoE, Mr Enoch Cobbinah, told the Daily Graphic that the visit was part of the preparations towards the execution of the project and to ensure that the land titles had been legally acquired, as well as compensations paid to affected people.

He noted that the ministry did not want any legal suits to be instituted against the government in the future, hence the need to ensure the lands released were not in dispute to affect the project.

According to him, during the visit,  it came to light that some assemblies were still in the process of acquiring the lands legally and, therefore,  urged them to speed up the process in the next two months to enable the projects to begin.

He added that some of the beneficiary districts did not have senior high schools and that it was a dream come true for them to benefit from the project to enable pupils from  those areas to have access to senior high school education.

He stressed that it was the obligation of  the government to ensure equity in the access to education,  especially  in the deprived areas in the country,

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, urged the district assemblies to be diligent and ensure that the lands earmarked for the projects were not in litigation.

He expressed the hope that the construction of the schools would reduce the pressure on existing senior high schools, as well as increase access to senior high school education.
