Merchant Bank awards excellence

The overall best candidate of the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Distinction Awards has been offered an educational scholarship.

The scholarship was offered by Merchant Bank Ghana limited to Ms Ivy Ama Mannoh, who schooled at the Wesley Girls Senior High School.

The other two, Rhoda Adu-Boafo and Master Dery Mwinmaarong also received laptops from the bank.

The awards were meant to compliment what they had already received from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Ivy Ama Mannoh, Rhoda Adu-Boafo both schooled at the Wesley Girls Senior High School and Master Dery Mwinmaarong Lucio, who schooled at the St Francis Xavier Seminary Junior  Seminary SHS, won the first, second and third positions, respectively. 

Ms Ivy Ama Mannoh, currently reading Medicine at the University of Ghana Medical School, Legon, received ¢2500 from WASSCE, $2500 from the Ghana national office of WASSCE,  GH¢1000 from the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, and a certificate.

Rhoda Adu-Boafo and Master Dery Mwinmaarong also received $250 and $200, respectively, a certificate and framed citation for their alma mater.

The Managing Director of the bank, Ms Nilla Selormey, explained that the overall best student scholarship covered full tuition, accommodation and books for the duration of the first degree course in Ghana.

Commitment to developmental issues

Presenting the items to the award winners, she said like all forward thinking companies, Merchant Bank Ghana Limited believed in committing to the developmental issues of communities it operated in.

According to her, that reinforces the bank’s collaboration with the West African Examinations Council. 

She emphasised that collaborations of that nature were very needful to promote educational excellence especially in Ghana.

Ms Selormey applauded the WAEC for its passionate focus regarding its core mandate of development of scholastic aptitude.

Ms Selormey said economic achievement and educational achievement were intertwined and for that reason, education was at the heart of Merchant Bank's corporate social responsibility.
