Melcom institutes scholarship package for orphans

Children of the staff members of Melcom who lost their lives in the collapse of the Achimota Melcom building in November last year will benefit from a scholarship scheme instituted by the Melcom Group of Companies.

Under the scheme, surviving children of the deceased are to benefit from a scholarship from the basic to the tertiary level of education.

This was announced by the Communications Director of the company, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, at the first anniversary in memory of the 13 workers of the company who lost their lives in the disaster.

On November 7, 2012, the Achimota branch of the Melcom Company building collapsed, killing 13 workers with 67 others sustaining various degrees of injuries. 

According to Mr Avenorgbo, since the third term of the last academic year, surviving children whose details were submitted by family members had started benefitting from the scheme. 

The first batch of the scholarships were awarded to Adu Kofi Maxwell; the Hilltop Sch, Daban, Kumasi, Nkansah Owusu Theodora; Prince of Peace Int. School Parents Association, Annan Emmanuel; Tinny Flowers Academy School, Accra, Azagba Dede Janet ;Atwima Agogo D/A JSS, Abuakwa, Armah James K. Chaiku; Presbyterian Boys’ Sec Sch. Legon.

Others are Quaye Hannah, Blessed Assurance Int. Sch. New Fadama, Kwakye Ezra Peprah; St. Marys’ Boys Snr High School, Mensah Mills Rejoice; Christ Family Academy, Teshie, Oppong Stanley; Sacred Heart School Complex (GES),Tetteh Sylvanus; Next-page Int. Sch, East Dadekotopong-La. 

The Melcom Education Committee, which is chaired by Mr Avenorgbo, has seven members including, Mrs Edith Allotey, Joseph Acheampong, Frank Owusu, Selorm Setsoafia, George Essel and Nana Berhene. Present at the special ceremony to observe a one minute silence in memory of the deceased were, Mr Ramesh Sadhwani, Group Joint Managing Director, Mrs Rani Melwani, Director and Mrs Sonya Sadhwani, Director of Brand Management.
