Mathematics, Science bursaries for students

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE), has provided bursaries to over 2,000 students studying Mathematics, Science and Technology at the secondary and tertiary levels of education in the country.

The Deputy Minister of the MESTI, Dr Musheibu Mohammed Alfa, made this known when he presented 700 laptops to seven colleges of education in the  Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo regions at a  ceremony at the Wesley College in Kumasi. He said the provision of bursaries was to complement the  Better Ghana ICT  Project.

Each of the 13 colleges of education, including three private ones, received 100 laptops. The schools are the Wesley College, Akrokerri, Berekum, Cambridge, Jackson, St Monica's, St Andrews, St Louis, Atebubu; Offinso, Agogo, Mampong Technical and St Joseph.

The deputy minister said the government's central objective of equipping the country's colleges of education was to promote the development of a technologically- empowered teaching force so that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) would be embedded in teaching and learning in the schools from the basic level.

Dr Alfa said the MESTI, having taken into consideration the need to enhance access and ensure effective utilisation of the laptops by the students, had already equipped the laboratories of pre-tertiary institutions (both public and private), as part of its reviewed policy in implementing the project in 2013.

He said so far, about 40,000 laptops had been distributed to more than 800 senior high school (SHS) and technical/vocational institutions.

The distribution of laptops,  initiated in 2010, demonstrates the government's commitment to promote ICT for the future development of the country.

Dr Alfa said  the authorities of the various beneficiary colleges must  ensure that the laptops were put to maximum use for the benefit of all teacher trainees and their tutors.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Yaw Adusei,  commended the MESTI for its efforts at promoting ICT, which, he said, was a catalyst for the accelerated development of every country.

He said the MESTI presented 50 laptops each to 147 government assisted schools in the Ashanti Region last year, and that demonstrated the government’s eagerness to promote ICT.

The Principal of the Wesley College of Education, Mr Joseph Eshun- Famiyeh, on behalf of the recipient principals, thanked the ministry for its efforts at promoting ICT in the colleges.

He, however, pleaded with the ministry to make more of such facilities available to the colleges.
