Mathematics Association organises workshop in Birim Central

The Mathematics Association of Ghana (MAG) has organised a two-day workshop at Akyem Oda for 280 public/private kindergarten and primary one school teachers in the Birim Central municipality.

Themed “Building a solid foundation for further Mathematics,” the workshop was part of a nationwide programme to correct the wrong impression created by some teachers that Mathematics is a difficult subject.

Addressing the participants, Madam Adwoa Nkrumah, the former President of MAG, said the association had identified that the poor performance of pupils and students in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was the result of the weak or poor foundation laid at the kindergarten and lower primary levels.

She said it was due to that that MAG decided to embark on the nationwide campaign to train the kindergarten 1 and primary one teachers.

Madam Nkrumah, who was the facilitator, advised the participants to make the teaching and learning of Mathematics practical and interesting.

“You should stop forcing pupils to write bigger numbers they do not understand. For example, writing 200 is meaningless to a kindergarten child,” she stressed.

She emphasised the need for them to use more teaching and learning materials in teaching Mathematics to make the subject attractive and interesting in order to lay a solid foundation for the subject;

Madam Nkrumah enjoined the teachers to use the syllabus prepared by the Ghana Education Service (GES), and appropriate teachers’ and pupils’ textbooks in the preparation of their lesson notes.

The Birim Central Municipal Director of Education, Mr Fred Kpooh, who opened the workshop, advised the participants to pay special attention to the facilitators to eradicate the myth surrounding Mathematics.

He also urged them to make the teaching and learning of Mathematics very interesting and practical.

Mr Kpooh urged the teachers to be free with the pupils, interact with them and not to be intimidating because if they complained at that level that Mathematics was difficult, the perception would remain forever.
