Marshalls university gets recognition

Marshalls University College has set out to become the Ivy League University in Africa in the next 10 years, the President of the university college, Mr Tetteh Nettey, has said.

He said although the university college had started very small, it intended to be at the top using modern technology and teaching methods.

Mr Nettey said this in an interview, following the recognition and publication of the success story of Meridian Pre-University (MPU), the institution that gave birth to Marshalls, in the 2013 edition of the Cambridge University Guide To Excellence.

The publication, among other things, recognised the goal of the MPU in preparing students for their chosen universities.

The MPU, established in 2007, has provided pre-university education to about 2,000 students. It is situated on the same campus as Marshalls at Odorkor in Accra.

With the parent institution -Meridian - being recognised, Mr Nettey said Marshalls, the ‘new baby’ which would take off effectively this month with the 2013-2014 academic year, had taken a cue from Meridian Pre-university and “would build on its success story”.

“The international recognition goes to show our hard work and dedication to excellence. Throughout the years, people did not know how we made the pre-university to operate,” he said.

“Cambridge came here and interviewed us. Some of the interviews were done on the phone. We showed them the processes we have been using; of course it is an industry secret”.

Cambridge University, Mr Nettey said, realised that Meridian was doing things differently, hence  the recognition. At Meridian, among other things, students are made to write examinations every month. This is to position them well ahead of students in other institutions.

The publication, Mr Nettey said, meant that management was doing something right, indicating that the future was bright for Ghanaian students.

“We look to the future with joy. If Meridian started six years ago and now we have a university college coming up, you can tell that the university college is not a starter. It is indeed something that has six years of history,” he or said, adding that “if anybody out there thinks Marshalls is a starter, he or she is making a big mistake because we are babies with teeth”.

Marshalls University College is affiliated to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and has been given both institutional and programmes accreditation by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).

The university college has a mission to apply Christian values and integrated, moral-based tertiary education to meet the needs of Africa and the world as a whole.

Its aims and objectives are to provide adequate resources for high quality social interaction of both students and staff; and provide adequate resources for high quality university education, training, research and consultancy based on biblical concepts and values.

Marshalls College also aims to provide students with a balanced educational programme that will help them to develop and broaden their perception of life through the inculcation of concepts that ensure innovative thinking.
