Marshalls, Imani launch IChat platform

The Marshalls University College in partnership with Imani Ghana, a policy think tank, has launched the Marshall i Chat (MiC), an educational platform initiative aimed at inculcating in students a high level value for critical thinking.

The initiative also aims to make students of the school bold and confident in debates, after they have thought through and researched their topics very well.

Aside that, it is to enable the students to speak their minds intelligently and in a scholarly manner and use the results of the research and debates to influence change in Africa and the world.

Launching the initiative, the President of Marshall College, Mr Tetteh Nettey, said the vision of Marshalls was to be a unique institution that produced devout, well-grounded and well-rounded persons who responded to the current and future needs of humanity.

"As part of our vision, we are always thinking of innovative ways to ensure that we give this vision an expression. Industry has over the years been lamenting about the low level of graduates being produced from our various universities,” he said.

Mr Nettey noted that after hatching the idea of the MiC, Marshalls had to look for a partner who would bring depth, currency and volume to the table, adding,  "We are happy to say that Imani, Centre for Policy and Education, gladly agreed to partner with Marshalls to make ‘the MiC’ an international platform for critical thinkers."

According to him, Marshalls had already developed an online platform for Marshalls iChat and that all group members could register and share information on platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and Hi5, which could be accessed on the Marshalls website.

The Executive Director of Imani Ghana, Mr Franklin Cudjoe, lauded the initiative, adding that it would help revive the dwindling process of critical thinking.

"The whole idea of public policy demands critical thinking," he said, adding that "critical thinking is the way to go".

The think tank would, among other things, provide contents on the topics that would be discussed with some other level of directions to the initiative.

The ideal, according to Mr Cudjoe, was to help students to do proper research, adding that since Imani had a lot of expertise in that area; it was going to add up to whatever the students were doing in the classroom to acquire the know-how and not just knowledge.

National, continental and international issues would be tackled under the MiC.
