Managers of mission schools commended

A former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahanta West in the Western Region, Mr Andrews Kwesi Biney, has commended managers of mission schools in the country for their commitment to protecting school lands under their care.

He said that singular effort had made it impossible for unscrupulous individuals and groups to encroach on those lands for their selfish interests.

The former DCE gave the commendation when he addressed the 75th anniversary celebration of the St John’s Methodist Basic School at Apowa in the Ahanta West District.

The ceremony had the theme: "The Importance of ICT in Education- The Role of Stakeholders."

Mr Biney, who chaired the function, expressed regret that some lands belonging to public schools in the country had been encroached upon by developers, since authorities of such schools had failed to offer the needed protection.

He, therefore, called on district directors of education to ensure that trees were planted around all acquired lands, in the absence of walls, as a measure to protect them effectively.

That, he explained, would further ensure that there would be adequate land in their care for future school infrastructure.

Competition

Mr Biney observed that the competition among schools, in terms of examinations, no longer existed and therefore advised heads of schools to compare the performance of their students in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with that of others in the community,  so that they would be encouraged to do better.

The former DCE also observed that teachers in public schools might be better trained than those in the private establishments, yet children in the latter performed better than those in the government established institutions.

He stated that with a little more commitment and effective supervision, the scenario would change, adding that parents and guardians should also be concerned about the future of their children.

2014 BECE

Rev. Ernest K. Agbanyo, the Headmaster of Apowa Methodist Basic School, disclosed in his report that the school performed better at the 2014 BECE, scoring 60 per cent as against 2013 and 2012, when the results were 23 per cent and nine per cent respectively.

He indicated that teachers in the school were doing their best to ensure that discipline was maintained at all times as a panacea for ineffective teaching and learning.

ICT Centre

The Bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese of the Methodist Church, Ghana, Rt Rev. Edward Ofori-Donkor, and the former DCE jointly cut the sod for the commencement of work on a GH¢120,000 Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centre for the school.
