Man graduates at 72

If you think four years is a long time to wait until you receive your degree, just imagine waiting 72 years for it.

That is the story of Mr Leonard Adzetey who enrolled at the Presbyterian University College and finally graduated with Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration ( Management Option) in August, 2014 at age 72. 

“I feel so blessed to have undertaken this course which has uplifted me in life despite my age,” Mr Adzetey proudly said.  

Speaking to The Mirror, Mr Adzetey stated that  apart from the grace of God which made this feat possible, his family, course mates and lecturers also motivated him to push on.

“When I enrolled and commenced lectures at the Tema Campus, many of the younger students in my class were surprised. Even the lecturers were equally surprised but knowing what I wanted to achieve, I persevered. I always encouraged myself and competed academically with my course mates.”

Mr Adzetey said  he is equipped to take on other challenges, his age not withstanding. 

Recounting his campus days, the father of four said he felt uneasy in the first three months. 

“Sitting down for three-hour lectures proved very challenging, considering my age. I had pains in my foot and waist from the long hours of sitting. Sometimes I couldn’t even see the board clearly but after  a few months, I adjusted to the system and gradually shrugged them off and moved on.”

Early life and education

Mr Adzetey was born on July 24, 1942 in Kpone.  In 1964, he enlisted in the Ghana Police Service but later resigned in 1968 with the rank of Constable Class One to pursue other interests including academics.

He enrolled at the SNAPS College of Accountancy in 1969 and by 1971 he did his O’Level and continued to pursue courses Cost Accounting and Financial Accounting

He later proceeded to the then Institute of Professional Studies where
