Nana Sasraku, who is also the Mamfehene, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), after a visit to some of the schools, that the major challenges facing the schools were inadequate infrastructure and basic amenities.

He noted that there were good schools on the ridge, including Aburi Girls and Okuapemman SHS, but because these schools received many applications annually, most students from the area hardly got admission to them; they rather get admission to the community schools around which do not have adequate infrastructure and amenities.

The schools visited included Mampong Presbyterian, Adukrom Secondary/ Technical, Mamfe Methodist Girls and Mount Sinai Senior High schools.

Most of the schools visited were established by either missions or private individuals and were later absorbed into the public education system.

These schools, the GNA noted, had challenges with potable water for which some had to rely on streams. They also lacked dining and assembly halls, enough classrooms and dormitory blocks, leading to serious congestion, with the lack of  walls compounding security problems in those schools.

Nana Ansah Sasraku said “education is an important tool for development and therefore cannot be left solely in the hands of the government to provide the necessary logistics and infrastructure.” He therefore called on all stakeholders to come to the aid of the schools to enable them to provide quality education for the people on the Akuapem Ridge.
