The Board Chairman of St Mary’s Senior High School, Very Rev. Addae Boateng, has asked education authorities to make use of modern teaching methodologies to enhance effective teaching and learning.

He said modernisation and improved technology called for innovative strategies that would ensure that challenges in education were surmounted.

“There is the need for the Ghana Education Service (GES) to collaborate with other stakeholders, including metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) and traditional authorities, to promote education,” he said.

Speaking at the 66th Speech and Prize-giving Day of the school on Saturday, Rev.Boateng said there was the need to prioritise education of the girl-child to promote national development.

Educated girl

The ceremony, which was on the theme “The Educated Girl:  Attitude, Values and Challenges”, brought together parents, heads of second cycle institutions in Greater Accra, officers from the metropolitan and regional directorates of the GES, and members of the general public.

An artistic display by the 44-member school cadet team, traditional dances, choreography and poetry recital preceded the presentation of awards to students who distinguished themselves in various subjects and the best-performing teaching and non-teaching staff members.

Appeal for support

The Headmistress of the school, Ms Doris A. Bramson, made an appeal to the government, through the Ministry of Education (MOE), to help solve the problem of the perennial flooding in the school.

“I have made distress calls to people in authority over the years about the dangers the storm drain in the school poses to life and property. The storm drain runs through the heart of the school, carrying waste from Korle-Gonno into the lagoon. It is only a small bridge that spans this gutter to enable students to get access to the classrooms and dormitories,” she said.

Equal opportunities for females

The Managing Partner of Gavel and Cross, Ms Vivien Lamptey, who is a past student of the school, called for equal opportunities for females in all spheres of human endeavours.

She said gender-based discrimination against women was a bane to social and economic development since it made females more prone to vulnerability.

“I appeal to the government to reform all legal frameworks and ensure their enforcement to remove any obstacles towards gender equality, discrimination and support girl-child education,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Senior School Prefect, Ms Josephine Atorku Dogbe, who received two awards in two subjects and the Best Behaved Student award, highlighted the challenges of the school, including lack of facilities to ensure good sanitation, and appealed to stakeholders to help the school to address its challenges to provide students with a conducive school environment.
