The USAID Networks Ghana Project has presented 136 jerseys to the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Education Directorate for distribution to eight primary schools in the municipality as their reward for educating their pupils and communities to overcome malaria through drama.

The programme which was extended to the various schools, communities, markets and churches, was aimed at fulfilling the President’s Initiative on Malaria Prevention.

The beneficiary schools are Kodjonya Millennium Presby Primary, Atua St. Paul’s Presby Primary, Odumase Akro Municipal Assembly Primary, Seven Kings International School and Agomanya Roman Catholic Primary. The rest are Kpong Methodist Primary, Wawase Municipal Assembly Primary and Nuaso St. Clement Roman Catholic Primary.

Speaking at a ceremony during which the jerseys were presented to the eight schools, the Municipal Director of Education, Madam Margaret Aku Vormawor, expressed the education directorate’s gratitude and appreciation to the USAID Networks Ghana Project, and said the presentation of the jerseys to the beneficiary schools would go a long way to promote games and sports in the municipality.

The ceremony coincided with the first meeting of the heads of basic schools in the municipality with the newly appointed director.

Madam Vormawor said games and sports played a key role in the education of pupils, and stressed the need for the teachers to include such activities in their programmes adding “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.

SHEP Coordinator

Giving the background of the presentation, the Lower Manya Krobo School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinator, Mr Godfried Ofoe Caesar, said SHEP in collaboration with the Municipal Cultural Coordinator, trained the various school-based SHEP coordinators, who in turn trained selected pupils using drama to educate their colleagues on how to use the Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLIN) in malaria prevention.

Mr Caesar who presented the items to the Municipal Director of Education on behalf of USAID Networks Ghana Project, noted that the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, collaborated with USAID on the President’s Initiative on Malaria Prevention.

He advised the School-Based SHEP Coordinators and drama groups to keep on educating their colleagues and parents on the need to prevent malaria by cleaning their environments and properly disposing of items such as broken bottles and other containers that could breed mosquitoes.

Making use of mosquito nets

He also stressed the need for pupils to sleep in mosquito nets and urged them to encourage their colleagues who had been given the LLINs to use them always.

Mr Joseph Amesimeku, the Deputy Director of Education in charge of Statistics and Planning, who is also the Physical Education Coordinator for the municipality, thanked the donors for their support and added “the donation has eased some of our difficulties in organising games and sports this year”.

He presented trophies won by some students at the recent National Games and Sports Festival held in Ho to the heads of the respective schools.
