Let’s salvage the dwindling educational system

A former Director of Education, Mr Eric Obese Amponsah, has called on stakeholders in the educational sector to help salvage the education in the country.

He said the deterioration and inadequate facilities in schools, examination malpractices and the general decline in standards attested to the falling system.

That, he said, called for an in-depth and holistic approach to engage all stakeholders to discuss how their actions and inaction contributed to the collapsing sector.

At the 25th anniversary celebration and graduation of Bena’s Preparatory School, on the theme: “25 years of Good Academic excellence”, Mr Amponsah observed that the poor remuneration of teachers also contributed to the problem, saying that it reduced the willingness of teachers to perform.

Challenges

The numerous challenges confronting the educational system, Mr Amponsah said, included poor parental guidance, poor preparation of students towards their studies and lack of human capital.

He also encouraged the continuous effort in training teachers to adequately equip them to meet new trends in education.

Mr Amponsah, however, charged schools, especially private institutions to adopt modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) approaches in managing the affairs of their schools.

Research development

Mr Amponsah also stressed the importance of research to the growth of institutions and organisations, urging them to allocate adequate funds to finance research programmes.

He added that research had over the years made it possible to access and use modern learning aids such as computers and the Internet to facilitate research.

Graduates

The proprietress of the school, Mrs Mary Osafo, urged parents and guardians to invest substantially in the education of their children to ensure their successful future.

She also requested that parents visited their children in school at least twice a term to be abreast of their performance and establish a good relationship with their teachers.

Mrs Osafo further advised parents to monitor the use of mobile phones by their children, as that was a distraction to their studies and performance.
