At the 27th graduation ceremony of the Ambariya Islamic Institute in Tamale in the Northern Region, Dr Nashiru said prioritising the education of the girl-child was necessary, to help her grow to become an economically empowered adult.

The ceremony, which saw 263 students graduating with diplomas and certificates in Arabic and Islamic studies, was on the theme: “The role of Islamic education in promoting peace.”

Dr Nashiru urged parents to show interest in their children’s education by providing them with learning materials, as well as paying visits to their schools to enquire about their performance.

Counselling

The Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, called on educational institutions to include guidance and counselling programmes in their curricular activities in order to ensure that children selected the right courses that would make a positive impact on their lives in future.

He said although many children had big aspirations in life, without proper counselling, it would be difficult for them to achieve such goals.

Alhaji Fuseini, therefore, advised the continuing students to be disciplined and study hard to enable them to pass their examinations without having to engage in examination malpractices.

Scholarship

The Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Alhaji Mohammed Haroon, in an address, advocated more scholarship schemes to motivate more girls to pursue higher education.

He also advised parents to avoid discriminating against girls and treat all children equally by giving them equal access to education.

The Leader of Ambariya Sunni Community and Director of Ambariya Islamic Institute, Sheikh Sa-eed Abubakar Zakaria, said although the institute started with few students in 1961, it could now boast over 3,000 students from the kindergarten to the diploma level.

He stated that the institute had established a scholarship scheme to assist brilliant, needy children to have access to quality education.
