Lebanese community awards scholarships to deprived students

Twenty-one young Ghanaians, most of them from the Northern and Central regions, are the latest group to receive scholarship from the Lebanese community in the country.

The scholarship is to help the students, who come from deprived communities in the two regions, to climb the academic ladder and lift the financial burden off their parents.

At an awards ceremony held at the Lebanese Embassy in Accra, the Lebanese Ambassador, Mr Ali Halabi, posited that “nothing beats the fulfillment that comes from knowing that your little quota has pushed another person to attain greater heights and, for us, that is the real essence of life”.

Life-long relationship

He reiterated that the Lebanese community had built long-lasting relationships with Ghanaians which dated back to centuries so the gesture was a way of showing appreciation and also meant to solidify that bond of friendship.

“We will continue to render our support in whichever form whenever, wherever,” he stressed.

Ms Hanna Tetteh, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, who was the special guest of honour at the function, expressed her gratitude to the Lebanese community for coming to the aid of deprived students in the country and urged the recipients to translate the goodwill into excellence in their academic work.

Economic opportunities

She also used the opportunity to assure the business community in Ghana that the government was taking steps to stabilise the economy and provide a healthy climate for commerce.

“We are aware of the current challenges facing the business community, especially the unstable power situation. I would like to assure you that the government is working hard to resolve them to boost business,” she stressed.

Mr Mark Woyongo, a Minister of State, who was also present, commended the efforts of the Lebanese community and urged the students to work hard to justify the confidence reposed in them.

Apart from this batch of beneficiaries, the Lebanese community, in the past three years, has awarded scholarships to 150 students in various fields of study in the country.

They include the children of deceased security officers, students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, as well as students studying Law in the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
