The event forms part of several initiatives by the Lebanese community to contribute to the welfare of Ghanaian students and strengthen the strong bonds of friendship which the Lebanese community shares with the people of Ghana.

At the ceremony, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Ali Halabi, was excited that under his watch, the scholarship scheme, which was initiated some four years ago, had grown from strength to strength.

Growth of scheme

“I am happy to see this scheme grow, over the past few years, to cover different groups of recipients. Currently, there are well over 100 Ghanaian students benefitting yearly from these scholarships in one form or another.”

“Brilliant law students from the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, as well as excellent students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism (those pursuing both degrees and masters) and those from the Ghana School of Law are all beneficiaries.”

“In addition, children of the martyrs of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Police Service, are also being assisted by this scheme to complete their education,” the ambassador said.

Dr Halabi expressed appreciation to the leadership of KNUST for their support in the successful implementation of the scholarship scheme.

“Kindly permit me to salute, in particular, Professor (Mrs) Lydia Apori Nkansah, Dean of the Faculty of Law of KNUST, for her tireless effort and cooperation in making the scholarship scheme a success here in KNUST. My gratitude goes also to the Vice Chancellor, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, the Provost and all academic and administrative staff,” he said.

Lebanese community commended

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso, for his part, commended the Lebanese community for their exemplary leadership in Ghana.

“If all the other communities emulate the actions of the Lebanese community, Ghana would benefit greatly,” he declared, adding that the award would serve as a source of motivation for the students to further excel.

The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr Nkansah, expressed her great pleasure for being part of the scholarship scheme since its inception, adding that awarding scholarships to law students was a worthy investment.

“Quality legal education requires investment. The scholarship scheme of the Lebanese community is commendable because it has improved the quality of learning,” she observed.

A beneficiary, Mr Benedict Nii-Kraku, a final year student, thanked the Lebanese community, on behalf of the other recipients, saying “the institution of the scholarship scheme encouraged his fellow students to always strive for the best.”

He also thanked the Faculty of Law for its help in facilitating the scholarship scheme.
