Lancaster University Ghana to hold conference on September 8

As part of efforts to develop professional programmes in Health Leadership, Management and Public Health for West Africa, the Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) will hold a conference between September 8-9 at their campus in East Legon, Accra.

The conference will bring together leading academics, policy makers, clinicians, practitioners and students from the UK and West Africa with the view to assessing current and future challenges for medical management in West Africa.

A press statement issued by Lancaster University Ghana says individuals who attend the conference will have the opportunity to learn about contemporary research in health and medicine, share research ideas and network with practitioners and researchers from the UK and Africa.

Some of the keynote speakers of the conference include, Dr Gilbert Buckle - CEO of Korlebu Teaching Hospital, Dr Jemima Dennis-Antwi - Rector, Ghana College of Nurses & Midwives, Professor Roger Pickup – Professor at Lancaster University, Dr Derek Gatherer –lecturer at Lancaster University, Dr Luigi Sedda –lecturer at Lancaster University. 

The statement added that all submissions will be carefully referred in a double-blind process after the August 15 deadline.

The total cost for the conference is $100 which covers registration, lunch and coffee over the two days and one conference dinner. There will also be site-seeing tours on the 10th of September for interested participants for an extra fee.

Below is the full statement; 

Lancaster University (LU) is renowned for providing world-class education to students. It is ranked amongst the top ten universities in the UK, according to the 2017 Guardian university league table, and internationally is ranked amongst the top one per cent of universities in the world.

It is the only British University to have a fully-fledged branch campus in West Africa and is set to grow into a major regional teaching and research university of international standing in the near future; for Lancaster, health and medicine are a significant existing part of its educational and research portfolio and are set for further development. 

Lancaster University Ghana is in the process of developing continuous professional development programmes in Health Leadership, Management and Public Health in Ghana so a Health Conference is the perfect platform to share its interest in Health and Medicine in West Africa.  

This September, Lancaster University Ghana is hosting a Health Conference and although Lancaster University hosts medicine and health related conferences regularly in the UK, this is the first conference of its kind in West Africa to be hosted by Lancaster University Ghana.  

Once LUG’s purpose-built, multi-disciplinary campus is completed in the next few years the university will significantly expand their current rate of programme offerings to include new programme suites, including health, engineering, environment and eco-innovation.  The university also intends to host a variety of conferences in Ghana across our disciplines highlighting our centres of excellence.

The purpose of this conference is to bring together leading academics, policy makers, clinicians, practitioners and students from the UK and West Africa with the view to assessing current and future challenges for medical management in West Africa.  It also serves as a platform for students in Africa who are undertaking PhD programmes in LU and elsewhere to showcase and receive feedback on their work.  By attending this conference, individuals will have the opportunity to learn about contemporary research in health and medicine, share research ideas and network with practitioners and researchers from the UK and Africa.

The scope of the conference includes challenges from the spread of infectious diseases to the management of health services in the region

The deadline for all submissions is 15th August 2016. All contributions will be carefully refereed in a double-blind process for relevance and quality. The submitting author must indicate whether he/she would prefer to make an oral or a poster presentation. All presenting authors must be registered by 29th August 2016 to be included in the conference programme. 

Those interested are invited to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation at the forthcoming ‘Current and Future Challenges for Medical Management in West Africa’ Conference at Lancaster University Ghana and forward it as an email attachment to [email protected].  The document should include:

• The title of your presentation (maximum ten words).

• An indication on whether you are interested in an oral or poster presentation. 

• Author information. For each author, you will need to state their name and affiliation/institution (both typed exactly as they should appear in the programme).

• Corresponding author email contact details. This is the person who will be notified via email of acceptance or rejection. 

• An abstract (maximum 250 words) with text only and no tables / figures. Please note, the abstract should be presented in Microsoft Word, Times New Roman 12 pt., 1.15 line spacing, 2.54 cm margins and on A4 paper size.

The Health Conference will take place on 8th and 9th of September at the LU Ghana A&C Campus in East Legon, Accra.  It lasts from 8:30am – 4pm each day.  The total cost for the conference will be $100 US and covers registration, lunch and coffee over the two days and one conference dinner. There will be organised site-seeing tours on the 10th of September for interested participants for an extra fee.
