Kwanyako school excels in WASSCE
The Kwanyako Senior High School in the Agona East District in the Central Region excelled in the 2013 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) by recording a 99 per cent pass.

This sterling performance gave as many as 250 students the opportunity to gain admission to tertiary institutions across the country.
The headmistress of the school, Mrs Angelina Ocansey, announced this during the sixth Speech and Prize-giving Day and 23rd anniversary celebrations of the school.
The ceremony was used to inaugurate a two-storey girls’ dormitory funded by the GETFund and a boys’ dormitory sponsored by the Parent-Teacher-Association (PTA).
Mrs Ocansey stated that the remarkable improvement in the academic performance of the students was achieved as a result of pragmatic measures put in place to ensure effective teaching by teachers who went the extra mile to prepare the students adequately for the examinations.
Challenges
She indicated that the school started with 15 students but current student population stood at 1,242 made up of 664 males and 578 females.
Mrs Ocansey said with support from the government and other stakeholders, the school should be able to improve upon its infrastructure in order to accommodate most of the students in the school.
She added that the school needed additional classrooms since some of the students studied in an old block meant for the Catholic school which was near collapse while others had their lessons under canopies.
Guest Speaker
Dr Yaa Difie Osei, a retired Biochemistry lecturer at the University of Ghana, who was the guest speaker, said there was a synergy between science and technology and urged the educational authorities to encourage the study of both natural and applied sciences to help in the development of the country.
She noted that most advanced countries had national bodies that researched into the development of science and technology, which, to a large extent, had contributed to their advancement in all sectors of the economy.
She expressed worry that developing countries like Ghana had not given much attention to the development of science and technology, adding that good science translated into good innovations and development.
Deputy Central Regional Minister
The Deputy Central Regional Minister and MP for the area, Mrs Queenstar Pokuah Sawyerr, said as a way of assisting students in the district to acquire education, she had instituted a scheme dubbed: ‘’Maame Pokuah Fees Programme’’ under which 250 students were being financially supported at Kwanyako, Swedru and Nsaba Senior High schools.
She assured the school authorities of her resolve to ensure the completion of the dining hall complex by the end of the year.
The Chief of the town, Nana Ampem Darko V, advised the students to take their studies seriously, since education was an important legacy parents must bequeath to their children.
