They marched through the principal streets of Kumasi with placards and presented a petition to the Ashanti Regional Minister.

They demanded a better handling of their Tier 2 pension contributions and payment of arrears of incremental allowances due them.

The Vice President of NAGRAT, Angel Kabonu, who spoke on behalf of the teachers said their occupational-based pension scheme was not still operationalised and time was fast running out.

He explained that at a meeting between a government team and the teacher unions, the matter was referred to the National Tripartite Committee for consideration.

According to the teachers, pensions were of great interests to workers the world over and that it was their belief that referring the matter to the National Tripartite Committee for consideration does not demonstrate sufficient commitment on the part of the employer.

Mr Kabonu said it was worrying that no timelines were given for the consideration of the committee.

“We are also mindful that workers who would be retiring from next year are expected to benefit from the new pension scheme and that any further delays in its implementation will have dire consequences  for the affected teachers.”

They therefore appealed to the President to intervene for a speedy release of the funds to the Ghana Education Service (GES) trustees for management.

On incremental credit, he said what was due the teachers for 2010 and 2011 were still outstanding.
