Krobo Girls tops regional quiz

The Eastern Regional Deputy Director of Education, Ms Debora Baba Tunde, has advised students at any level of education not to see Science, Mathematics and Technology as male-dominated areas.

She said students rather needed to strive and excel in these fields since they were the driving force in the modern development process that would pushed developing countries to rub shoulders with developed countries in future.

Quiz competition

She gave the advice when she addressed participants from senior high schools in the region at the end of this year’s Regional Mathematics, Science and Technology quiz competition at the Pope John’s Senior High School in Koforidua.

Ms Tunde said girls often had the wrong notion that Mathematics and Science, especially, were male-dominated subject areas and feared to venture into that field, stressing that, no subject should be associated with any sex, as everybody was capable of studying it provided the learner was serious.

‘’Let me use today’s function to disabuse your minds that Mathematics, Science and Technology are meant for boys only.

You see that Krobo Girls Senior High School is a female school but has beaten well known Science-oriented school with a very wide margin. This should give you a strong signal that no subject should be pegged to any particular sex’’, the Deputy Regional Director added.

The participating schools at the finals were Krobo Girls from Odumase Krobo, Koforidua Secondary Technical, Mawuli SHS, Ho, and Legon Presbyterian Boys SHS.

In the final round Krobo Girls emerged winners with 73 points, followed by Legon Presec 52 points, and Koforidua Sec-Tech 28 points.

Congratulation

The Headmistress of Pope John’s SHS, the host institution, Mrs Benedicta Foli, congratulated the winning school on beating their male counterparts and encouraged all students to excel in the study of Mathematics and other Science-related subjects.

In a related development, the Municipal Chief Executive for Lower Manya Krobo, Mr Jacob Frederick Kwame Acolatse, has also congratulated Krobo Girls SHS on bringing honour to the municipality.

He said good academic performance also rested on the efforts of teachers and praised them for their dedication and commitment that had earned the school honours.

Presentation of trophy

The MCE made the comment when the Headmistress of the school, Ms Cecilia Obenewaa Appiah led a delegation of teachers and students from the school to present the trophy to him in his office at Odumase Krobo.

Mr Acolatse thanked the contestants for the school; Mercelene Asamoah, Carolyne Yanney and Bridget Welbeck for their dedication and commitment to win the trophy for the school and the municipality as a whole.

On behalf of the assembly, Mr Acolatse and the Coordinating Director, Mr Eric Hini, presented GH¢3000 to support the school for the national quiz competition in Accra.

The Headmistress, Ms Appiah, thanked the assembly for the support and pledged the school would do more to enhance quality education delivery in the area.
