Koninase-Nkran basic school needs trained teachers

Authorities of the Koninase-Nkran District Assembly (DA) Basic School in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region have appealed to the district directorate of education to post trained teachers to the school to enhance quality teaching and learning.

They said while there were only five teachers handling the 175 pupils at the junior high school, there were nine teachers teaching the about 298 pupils at the primary school, and out of the nine, only four were trained teachers with the remaining five being volunteers.

The headmaster of the junior high school section, Mr John Mensah, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, said the inadequate number of trained teachers at the school was a major challenge and pointed out that although many letters have been written to the District Directorate of Education to post trained teachers to the school, there had not been any positive response.

For his part, the headteacher of the primary section, Mr Isaac Boateng, said apart from the problem of inadequate teachers, there had also  been the burden on parents to contribute 50 pesewas a week to pay the volunteer teachers.

He said the school had to depend mostly on senior high school graduates, a situation which was not the best because they were not professionals.

To support the school, the Adansi Gold Company Limited, under its Education Support Programme, initiated extra classes for the schools at the beginning of 2012/2013 academic year where teachers who took part in the classes were paid some allowances to motivate them.

Speaking at a ceremony where the company presented 20,000 copies of exercise books to the schools, a deputy Director of Education at the district, Mr Peter Afoakwa Asante, said efforts were being made to help solve the problem of lack of trained teachers in the rural communities.
