KNUST honours Mamponghene, others

 

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science Technology (KNUST) has conferred an honorary doctorate degreee on Mamponghene,  Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, at the 2013 Founders Day Special Congregation of the university at the new auditorium.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu 11, who is also the paramount chief of Asante-Mampong Traditional Area was a former registrar of the university.

He was given the honours for his accomplishment as university administrator, a keen sportsman and his contribution to chieftaincy and national culture and tradition 

Other personalities who were also honoured with  doctorate degrees in different categories included,  Mr P.V. Obeng,  Chairman of the University Council, retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Mr  V.C.R.A.C Crabbe, Professor Emmanuel T. Acquah, Mr  Asare Akuffo, Professor Sir J.W. Acheampong and Professor Ernestina A. Addy.

 In  attendance was Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,  the  Asantehene,  who is also the Chancellor of the KNUST.   Citations 

The citation accompanied said, “Daasebre Osei Bonsu II  retired from the university on October, 1 2000, having served the university dutifully, faithfully and exenplarily for 28 years.”

It said,  “Daasebre Osei Bonsu II  ascended the Silver Stool in September, 1999 and  as a registrar of the university, he combined his administrative duties with his traditional role as Mamponghene and occupant of the Silver Stool of Ashanti.”

It stressed that, by so doing, he brought tradition, colour, honour and pageantry to the office,  the university and the chieftaincy institution.

The citation noted that  by that very token, he succeeded in lifting the image of the university worldwide as an academic institution imbued with and mooted in tradition, custom and societal values.

The citation said the university became an embodiment of tradition and modernity living side by side for the university's mission and vision.
