KNUST holds 2014 Founder’s Day

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has held the 2014 Founder’s Day and special congregation during which students of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) were presented with degrees.

A total of 1,852 graduates, including 26 students who pursued doctorate degrees were presented with certificates. Some of those who pursued doctorate degrees were sponsored by the Adventist Relief Agency (ADRA). 

Addressing the graduates, Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, said the country could develop through intensive research, hence the need to support the establishment of a Research Fund.

The country’s professionals    

She said Ghana had been blessed with professionals with expertise in various fields who were capable of contributing to national development. 

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the KNUST, Prof. W. O. Ellis, said the university would continue to implement a series of innovative programmes to offer more opportunities to students in support of the nation’s drive to advance the use of science and technology for development. 

He said the university’s Institute for Distance Learning (IDL) programmes were meant to provide greater access to science and technology education, adding that  there were plans for the commencement of the university’s Northern Sector Campus in Tamale, while arrangements had been concluded for the acquisition of a 17.5 acre parcel of land in Takoradi for the Western Campus.    

The Vice Chancellor said the university was also in collaboration with the Obuasi Municipal Assembly and Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) to conclude arrangements for the Obuasi Campus which would run programmes in science, engineering and the humanities.
