KNUST Governing Council inaugurated

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has charged the newly constituted 19-member Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to identify innovative ways and new partnership that can further improve the financial position of the university.

He said such innovations beyond the government’s support were a major step towards the solution of the problems of funding confronting tertiary institutions, since education at that level was facing tremendous challenges and competition across the globe.

29th Governing Council

The Asantehene gave the admonition at the inauguration of the 29th Governing Council of the university by the Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, in Kumasi last Tuesday.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged the council to come up with policies that would enable KNUST to compete favourably within the global village of learning and also encouraged the institution to build closer ties with other higher educational institutions both at home and abroad and more important, with industry.

He indicated that he, as the Chancellor of the university, was leading a fundraising drive to support research and teaching activities as a result of the dwindling government subvention and support to tertiary education.

The first of the fundraising drive was launched in Accra recently and the second is scheduled for Kumasi on Friday, June 24.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government recognised the specific responsibility of KNUST to the nation, as well as to the continent and the global community in educating, training and shaping the younger generation to be productive, innovative and transformative.

She said KNUST had helped address many important issues which were relevant to socio-economic development through various activities including research.
