The books, made up of fiction and non-fiction books; subject-theme books on Science, Mathematics, History, Literature, Geography and English; pencils for both writing and colouring and Art cases for students, are intended to encourage the pupils develop better reading habits, as well as give them a broader perspective about  subjects they study at school.

Making the presentation, the President of the Accra-East Rotary Club, Ms Gertrude Adzo Akpalu, said the gesture was also to bring to reality the international club’s theme for this year which is:  'Rotary Serving Humanity, Improving Basic Education and Literacy.’

Areas of focus

Ms Akpalu said improving basic education and making reading enjoyable to children “is one of the key areas of focus for the Rotary Club of Accra-East's programme and also one of the six areas of focus for Rotary International.”

She indicated that the donation was in collaboration with the Rotary Clubs of Blackburn, UK and Winterthur, Kyburg, Switzerland, stressing that the gesture was also to empower the children as “knowledge is power and that could only be attained through reading.”

The books were received on behalf of the school by the Chairperson of the institution’s board, Mrs Lucy Owusu, with support from the school’s Headmaster, Mr Eric Asamani, and some members of the school’s board.

Mrs Owusu, on behalf of the school and the church, expressed appreciation to the club for the kind gesture, adding that the pupils would be encouraged to spend more time at the school’s library which had been stocked with interesting books.
