‘Involve churches in running mission schools’

The Paramount Chief of the Torgome Traditional Area, Togbega Asamoah Nkwanta VI, has appealed to the government to consider the involvement of churches in the administration of basic mission schools to help inculcate moral virtues into pupils.

He observed that there was effective supervision and high level of discipline among pupils and teachers when churches played a leading role in the management of mission schools.

Togbega Nkwanta VI was speaking at Torgome in the North Tongu District in the Volta Region during a thanksgiving service to climax activities marking the 75th anniversary of the E.P. Church at Torgome.

 Moral decadence

Togbega Nkwanta expressed concern over the increasing rate of moral decadence among the youth and the low standard of academic performance in many public junior high schools in the country. He said he believed that churches had the religious and moral capacity to improve the situation.

 EP Church

His appeal to the Evangelical Presbyterian Church to establish a senior high school in the area was  accepted by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church, Rt Rev. Dr Seth Agidi.

The moderator expressed optimism that the establishment of a senior high school at Torgome would not only promote education and literacy among the natives but would largely curtail problems associated with unemployment and crime.

Rt Rev. Dr Agidi paid glowing tribute to the founding members of the church and urged the citizens to emulate their zealous and dedicated efforts.

 Ablakwa honoured

The occasion was also used to honour the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, for his dedicated stewardship towards the development of the area.

 Politicians

Rt Rev.Dr Agidi urged politicians to focus on formulating viable programmes that could improve the livelihood of their constituents rather than engaging in intra-party wrangling, undermining, vandalism and barbaric acts of killings that threatened the peace, stability and security of the country.

Mr Ablakwa, who is also a Deputy Minister  in charge of Tertiary Education, commended the E.P. Church for its role in the establishment of mission schools across the country.

In an address read on his behalf, the Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Mr Kirk Koffi, urged citizens of Torgome and adjoining communities to take advantage of the scholarship scheme initiated by the VRA to provide education to their children up to the tertiary level.
