The centre will offer a two-year sandwich course in the study of Arabic, leading to the award of a diploma.

It brings to six the number of centres opened by the GIL across the country. The others are located in Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Tamale and Sunyani.

The centre will also offer students the opportunity to study subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Geography.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani, in his inaugural speech, expressed optimism that the centre would afford the people of the region the opportunity to study another language that is spoken globally.

Globalisation

He stressed that in this era of globalisation, there was the need for one to speak more languages to keep abreast of global trends, indicating that Arabic was the fifth most spoken language in the world.

He called on students to patronise the centre.

The Director of the GIL, Dr John Amuzu Gadzekpo, expressed the hope that the people would take advantage of the facilities at the centre and learn more languages and indicated that there were moves to open similar centres in the Volta and Western regions.

The Upper West Regional Director of Education, Mr Iddrusu Mahama, commended the GIL for opening a centre in the region and gave an assurance that all efforts would be made to enhance the successful operation of the facility.
