Increased enrolment will affect our track record - Wesley Girls Old Students

The Old Students Association of the Wesley Girls’ High School (WGHS) have said any attempts by government to expand the individual class sizes of the school’s facilities would be detrimental to the quality of education at the school

According to them, the school’s hard-earned reputation is as a result of its academic excellence, adding that, that tradition could only be maintained by respecting the school’s headmistress’ executive responsibility and good judgment in the school’s admission process.

The old students association was responding to media reports that some 200 students who had gained admission to the school had been turned away due to lack of facilities.

Following that report, the Ministry of Education announced that it would provide temporary structures for schools facing admission challenges to enable them admit students who had been placed by the Computerised Schools Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

But a statement released on Wednesday and signed by the WGHS Old Students Vice President, Ms Juaben Serwa Amofa, described the media reports as “unsubstantiated stories”, adding that, the conditions and limitations of the educational system in Ghana were beyond the abilities of a single secondary school.

“We take exception to these allegations, which are based on anonymous, testimonials and unsubstantiated stories. Live Pure, Speak True, Right Wrong, Follow The King is our motto. In our almost 200-year history, we have strived to live up to this aspiration, and faithfully serve our nation, our communities and our families.

“Wesley Girls' generates respect and admiration worldwide, and we owe our reputation to the dedication of our teachers and staff—past and present—and to our active network of Old Girls. We also owe our hard-earned reputation to our admissions process, which places a strong emphasis on academic excellence,” the statement said.

The statement also appreciated the anxiety of parents regarding their children’s future, noting that, “the real issue at stake is Education in Ghana”.

The old students are therefore, calling for a public dialogue on the education system and help identify opportunities for improvement.

“We call for your support in creating “life opportunities” for all Ghanaian youth, regardless of social background, religion, hometown,” the statement said.
