Increase budgetary allocation to education sector

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Mr Collins Owusu Amankwah, has called for an increase in the budgetary allocation to the education sector to train more people to accelerate national development.

While admitting that the nation had over the years tried to provide the necessary resources needed in the educational sector, he said much needed to be done to ensure that all children of school age have unlimited access to education.

Inadequate infrastructure

He said some schools still lacked adequate classrooms to accommodate the ever increasing number of pupils, while others could not boast basic teaching materials.

He added that the country stood to benefit if more investments were made in the educational sector.

Mr Amankwah made the call on Friday when he presented a quantity of mono and dual desks to the Kumasi Metropolitan Directorate of Education for onward distribution to schools within the Manhyia North Constituency.

The presentation formed part of the MP’s contribution to the improvement of education in his constituency and the Kumasi metropolis as a whole.

In all, the MP intends to distribute a total of 1,000 desks procured from his share of the Ghana Educational Trust Fund (GETFund) for schools in the area this year.

Other support

Mr Amankwah has so far distributed close to 5,000 exercise books, school uniforms and other educational materials to some pupils over the years.

Metro Director

The Metro Director of Education, Mr Alexander Attah-Asante, who received the items on behalf of the beneficiary schools, praised the MP for his kind gesture and said although the government was doing its best to meet the demands of schools in the country, there was the need for individuals and other public-spirited institutions to complement its efforts.

He appealed to other MPs in the metropolis to emulate their colleague’s gesture and also come to the aid of the directorate by furnishing more schools.

Beneficiaries

Some of the schools in the Manhyia North Constituency that would benefit from the MP’s donation are Yennyawoso Presby Primary, New Tafo M/A Primary, P. O. Mensah Adventist, Duase M/A and Buokrom M/A ‘A’ and ‘B’.

Others are Wesco Primary, Anyano M/A Primary, Darul Uloom Primary at Buokrom and Al-Taw Jeeh Islamic School at Moshie Zongo.
