The Volta Regional Director of the Department of Gender, Madam Lena Alai, has called for the inclusion of Gender Studies and Human Rights in the syllabus of the colleges of education in the country.

She said the subjects should also be taught from kindergarten to “give equal access to opportunities and resources to both sexes and eliminate gender inequality.”

Madam Alai made the call at a forum organised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers—Ladies Association (GNAT-LAS) in Ho to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, observed globally on March 8.

She said the country needed a harmonious environment where both sexes would have equal opportunities to exploit their potential for the rapid development of society, and urged the relevant authorities to consider making gender studies examinable for pupils and students.

Madam Alai also appealed to Parliament to fast-track the processes for the enactment of the Affirmative Action Law to get more women involved in the decision-making process.

She asked female teachers to be assertive and “take up challenging opportunities.”

Madam Alai asked them to “go beyond mere teaching, give equal opportunity to all students and help change society’s perceptions about women.”

“The female teacher is a role model for both male and female students, as well as parents. How well she comports herself...has a lot to do in changing the perception of the society,” she stated.

The Ho District GNAT-LAS Co-ordinator, Madam Rejoice Kasu, said, “the struggle for women’s emancipation still continues” and called for strategies to achieve equality for women. — GNA
