ICT centres for two communities in Ashanti

Two communities in the Ahafo Ano North District will each benefit from an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre as part of efforts to promote the learning and teaching of ICT in schools in the area.

The communities are Asuhyiae and Abonsuaso, both in the Ahafo Ano North District in the Ashanti Region.

The centres are being financed by the Member of Parliament (MP) of the area, Mr Kwasi Adusei, at an estimated cost of GH¢98,000 from his share of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), to enable pupils from the communities to have practical lessons in ICT, which is an examinable subject at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

At a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the centres, Mr Adusei said even though ICT was an examinable subject, most of the schools lacked centres to enable them to study it effectively and that always put pupils from the less-endowed communities at a disadvantage.

He said that problem moved him to undertake the project, adding that his dream was to see pupils from less-privileged communities compete favourably with their counterparts in the big towns.

The MP said it was unfortunate that schools in the two communities did not benefit from the Better Ghana Free laptops and indicated that the centre would be equipped with computers and other equipment to ensure that the pupils derived the maximum benefits from the facility.

The District Chief Executive for the district, Mr David Addai Amankwah, pledged government’s support for schools in the districts, stressing that since education was the bedrock of development,  the government, through the assembly, would continue to provide schools with the needed facilities towards the attainment of quality education.
