High student-lecturer ratio at UCC worrying

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor D.D. Kuupole, has expressed worry over the high student/lecturer ratio in the university.

He said the high student population was putting severe pressure on the academic staff whom he commended for the sacrifices they were making in the interest of students.

Prof. Kuupole stated this at the matriculation ceremony to formally admit this year’s batch of students to the university last Saturday.

A total of 5,051 students were admitted to offer various programmes in the university.

Infrastructure development

He said the university was putting up a lecture room complex out of the proceeds realised from sandwich programmes to support infrastructure development and research.

He announced that UCC was also sourcing for a loan to put up an additional hostel to improve upon the accommodation situation and appealed to alumni, individuals and corporate organisations to contribute towards infrastructure development to make life meaningful for students.

Opportunity

Prof. Kuupole said the university was well placed to provide quality education through the provision of comprehensive, liberal and professional programmes that challenged learners to be creative, innovative and morally responsible citizens.

“Our goal is to prepare productive citizens and future leaders who can serve the national and global community in diverse ways,” he stated.

He added that the university was focused on serving the needs of students, without compromising on its set academic standards, saying, “We nurture and challenge students to grow socially, physically morally and intellectually.”

On quality education, Prof. Kuupole said the university offered relevant quality education that made students think critically and apply their knowledge to real-life situations.

“This is the culture into which you have been admitted. As students, you must fulfil your part in the achievement of this noble vision and help build up the positive image of the university,” he said.

Discipline on campus

Prof. Kuupole said the students’ handbook was there to make students behave responsibly in order to make life comfortable for every person who had the desire to pursue university education, but not to police them and make them scapegoats for punishment.

He indicated that the academic environment thrived on discipline and at the end of the students’ programme their worth as graduates would be determined by their comportment, behaviour and change of mindset, character and orientation.

“It is your enlightenment that should influence others positively in all aspects of life,” he stressed.

Prof. Kuupole said the safety of the students was of prime concern to the university authorities and, therefore, advised them to be cautious of their personal safety, since that was the best form of security.
