Help instil discipline in staff, students. School boards urged

The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Ms Gertrude Mensah, has stressed the need for school boards of governors to instil discipline in staff and students, since the academic excellence of any school depends to a large extent on good discipline.

She observed that indiscipline among staff and students  had reached levels that were not only disturbing, but also threatened the very existence of society.

“As board members, it is binding on you to help the school authority to maintain a high level of discipline at all times to promote effective teaching and learning, which would obviously improve the West African Senior school Certificate  Examination (WASSCE) results of the schools,'' she stressed.

Ms Mensah made the statement at the inauguration of a 14-member Board of Governors of the Salvation Army Senior High School at Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District in the Eastern Region last Tuesday.

Positive image

She urged the members to bring their experiences to bear on their new role to help project the positive image of the community and the nation during their tenure of office.

Ms. Mensah charged the board to ensure that the resources allocated to the school were used judiciously to create and promote a congenial school atmosphere for effective teaching and learning.

''As board members, you must live above reproach; you should always think of what you can do individually in the school rather than what the school can do for you; do not wait for problems to develop in the school before you come here,'' she told them.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Ebenezer K. Appati, noted with concern that the school's population had not increased as expected due to its geographical location, but stated that academic performance and discipline continued to improve as a result of the efforts put in by hard-working staff.

PTA lauded

Mr Appati was full of praise for the Parent-Teacher Association for purchasing a 45-KVA generator at a cost of GH¢72,000 for the school and for constructing a 15-unit classroom block for the school.

He appealed to well-to-do individuals, organisations and the government to provide the school with staff bungalows and a computer laboratory.

A member of the new board, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Bright Oduro, who is the Director General (Welfare),  expressed gratitude to the school authorities for the trust and confidence reposed in them and promised to live up to expectation.

Other speakers at the function included Professor S.K.B. Asante, the outgoing board chairman of the school, who donated 14 copies of a new book he has written to the school.
