‘Help BECE graduates check results at no cost’

The newly sworn-in President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Mr Samuel Darkwah Binfoh, has called on the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to ensure that Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates are able to check their results and school placement at no cost.

Mr Binfoh made the call in his acceptance speech at the swearing-in and handing-over ceremony of the NUGS executives for the 2013/2014 academic year in Kumasi and said on the average, each JHS graduate spent about GH¢10 on checking his or her results and placement and printing of placement sheet on the internet.

He said the current system placed financial burden on the students and suggested that the students should be able to check their results and school placements free of charge by visiting the website of WAEC, using their index numbers.

About 390,000 candidates sat for this year’s BECE in the country and on the average, each of them spent about GH¢10 to check his or her results, SHS placement and printing of SHS sheets on the internet

Mr Binfoh who is a Master of Business Administration (MBA) student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) advised students to take their studies seriously and called on students in the country to unite to help the government to push the education agenda forward.

He also called on all members of NUGS, particularly the leadership, to eschew political and institutional differences and pursue a common agenda to ensure that the right to education would become meaningful for every Ghanaian child and not a privilege.

He gave an assurance that the NUGS leadership under his administration would relentlessly pursue pragmatic policies and stick to decisions that would enhance a unity of purpose, dedication and accountability for the growth and development of the union.

NUGS, established about five decades ago, currently has six blocs to give students a common national platform and a common voice to address issues concerning their welfare.
