GTUC launches campaign to raise $100 million
The Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) has launched a fundraising campaign to raise $100 million to support the development of the university in the area of technology, research and innovation.

The money, expected to be realised within five years from now, would be used for the improvement of the school, including the setting up of an endowment fund, putting up a seven-storey students’ hostel, recruiting staff and researchers, and expanding faculties that would in turn bring in resources to promote learning and offer scholarships.
It would also be used to modernise the academic environment and replace outdated IT and telecommunication equipment in the laboratory, broaden the range of materials in the library and expand its electronic and online collections to meet the demands of 21st century education.
Centre of excellence
The President of GTUC, Dr Osei Dankwa, who announced this at the maiden fundraising event of the college at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Accra, said the campaign was being launched at the time higher education was being challenged to re-invent itself, when there was a paradigm shift in learning from face-to-face to a virtual learning environment.
“GTUC has responded to this emerging trend in online tuition by establishing a centre for online learning and teaching charged with the responsibility of putting almost all our courses online within the shortest time possible,” he announced.
Dr Dankwa said the mark of the university was found in how it supported its students, from freshmen to the doctorial students, adding, “They all want to make a difference in their own lives, communities, workplaces, at the university and in the world at large.”
He was hopeful that the corporate institution would support the university to realise its vision.
Cutting edge programmes
The Council Chairman of GTUC, Professor Walter S. Alhassan, in a speech read on his behalf, announced that the university had developed programmes in various areas such as engineering, oil and gas and information and Communication technology at all levels.
“Our young institution has subsequently received recognition from international bodies, including the European award for Best Practices which awarded it the Gold Category in Vienna; the European Business Assembly in Montreux, Switzerland, the Best university in technology education in West Africa; and the Business Initiative Direction Quality Award in Geneva, Switzerland,” he announced.
Professor Alhassan said beyond establishing physical campuses, the university’s plan was to put all its courses online so that students everywhere could have access without necessarily visiting the university’s campuses.
