Graphic grants scholarships to vendors’ children

The Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL) has granted scholarships to the children of three newspaper vendors to study in senior high school.

The students are Bobby Arthur-Williams, Adisadel College, Cape Coast; Opoku Mensah Oliver, St Augustine’s College, Cape Coast; and Esther Liza Biney, Methodist Senior High School, Saltpond, all in the Central Region.

Their parents, who are all longtime vendors of the Graphic brands (ranging from 20 to 40 years), have expressed gratitude to the GCGL for its gesture.

“I’m grateful to you. You have relieved me of a burden,” Ms Benedicta Klutse, a vendor in Takoradi and mother of one of the students, said in appreciation to the GCGL.

According to Mr James Biney of Cape Coast, the parent of another beneficiary, the scholarship for his daughter had come as a surprise to him.

“It is a big help in these times when our business of selling newspaper is facing difficulties. I am happy,” he said.

Another parent, Ms Rita Konadu, said her son was brilliant, so she needed help to push him and was, therefore, overwhelmed by Graphic’s help.

“I don’t know what to say. Thank you,” she said.

Development of vendors

Explaining why the GCGL decided to help vendors with scholarships for their children, the Managing Director, Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, said the company considered vendors as integral part of the business and thought it appropriate to support their children.

“We see education as a critical tool for development, so we think the way to help them is to grant their bright children scholarships to gain good education,” he said.

Mr Ashigbey added that granting these children scholarships was also a social responsibility which would contribute to the overall manpower development of the country.

In 2012, the GCGL paid $3000 for a vendor’s daughter, Ms Hannah Komeh, a medical student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, to take some courses in medicine in Poland as part of her training.
