Speaking at the 16th matriculation ceremony of NAFTI in Accra on Saturday, Mr Edward Ato Sarpong, Deputy Minister of Communications, indicated that the institute had become a major facility for the training of professionals for the country’s film industry, while some graduates of the institute have established commercial production entities to create job opportunities for many.

He said for these and other reasons, it was necessary to resource the institute and expand its facilities to enable it to admit many students.

Digital Systems

Mr Sarpong said Ghana would migrate from analogue to digital television system  by June 2015, and indicated that the transformation was expected to create job opportunities in the country.

He urged the matriculants to demonstrate creative abilities and show a high sense of responsibility.

Rector of the Institute

Addressing the ceremony, the Rector of NAFTI, Prof. Linus Abraham, asked the freshly admitted students to stay away from deviant behaviours that would drag the reputation of the university in the mud, urging them to attach seriousness to their studies in order to attain academic excellence.

Touching on the roles and values of the institute, he said, it was the institute’s objective to produce experts in the media and film industry to enhance development in the industry.

He challenged the fresh students to aim at becoming independent and commercially successful filmmakers who would bring transformation to the creative industry with quality productions after successful completion of their studies.

Admissions

Eighty students were admitted to the institute to offer various programmes such as film editing, directing, animations and motion pictures.

The rector of the institute stated that even though the number of students admitted was small, it was an improvement over the past admissions.

He said this was due to the modern equipment used to train students.
