Under the government’s intervention, GH¢7 million was made available to the institutions to enable them to complete projects which were 70 per cent or more complete.

The second intervention was the presentation of the 16, 000 pieces of furniture to the beneficiary institutions.

The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of tertiary institutions, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, presented the chairs to the authorities of the Universities of Cape Coast and Education, Winneba and the Cape Coast Polytechnic at their respective campuses in the Central Region last Wednesday.

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), which has three other campuses in Ajumako, Kumasi and Mampong, received 5,000 chairs to provide a conducive learning environment to the students.

The University of Cape Coast received 2,000 pieces of furniture, while the Cape Coast Polytechnic got 2,500.

Other public tertiary institutions to benefit from the scheme are the University of Ghana, Legon, University of Professional Studies (UPS), the Accra College of Education, among others.

Mr Ablakwa said the decision to present more furniture to the Winneba campus was informed by the fact that it had a larger population, as well as other campuses.

Receiving the set of furniture on behalf of the UEW, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Akwasi Asabere Ameyaw, said the intervention by the government had seen to the completion of the lodge of the vice- chancellor, the science faculty in the Winneba and Kumasi campuses and halls of residence in Mampong and Winneba.

The acting Vice Chancellor of the UCC, Rev Professor Abochi Ntere, called on the government to establish more classroom blocks to accommodate the ever-increasing population of the university.

The Rector of Cape Coast Polytechnic, Mr Lawrence Atepor, said the ‘intervention by the government was critical since the last set of furniture the institute purchased was in the 1999/2000 academic year. Now, the students and lecturers will enjoy a conducive learning environment.”
