‘Government committed to partnering private basic schools’

The Director in charge of Human Resource at the head office of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ms Ofeibea Donkor, has assured the public, particularly management of private basic schools, of the government’s intention to improve the standard of education in private basic schools in the country.

She added that despite the fact that the government had no control over the fees policy of such schools, it would ensure its affordability.

At the 13th Graduation ceremony of the Ideal Community School held in Accra last Saturday, she said the intervention was a move by the government to help solve the challenges faced by management of private schools nationwide.

“We want to partner all private schools, get them a policy that will guide them because it has been realised that some of these private schools are divided, which is a challenge,” she stated.

All hands on deck

Ms Donkor also emphasised the need for collaboration, but not competition, between private schools to ensure the attainment of their objectives.

She urged parents to get involved in the academic pursuit of their children, adding that the responsibility was on them and not solely on teachers.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the school, Ms Lucile Otoo, appealed to the governmen to support private basic schools in order to improve the standard of education at an affordable cost.

Operational cost

“This can be done by removing import and excise duties on teaching materials, textbooks and other educational materials which constitute the major operational cost of enterprise”, she stated.

She appealed to parents not to relent in the payments of their children’s school fees but see it as an investment for their future.

She also urged the teachers to offer their best to the children.

Ms Otoo assured all present of the number one goal of the school, which is to help raise and educate children to become the best future leaders, to be assets and not liabilities, with the help of the parents.
