‘GNAT will continue to serve interest of teachers’

The Manya Krobo District Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr John Gomey, has assured teachers in the area that the association will continue to serve the interest of teachers in the discharge of their duties.

He said it was in that regard that the association was supporting teachers to pursue further studies to improve on their performance.

“There is always room for improvement and so when the opportunity comes, do not hesitate but take advantage of it to improve on your lot,” the secretary advised.

According to him, “there are other teacher unions but sincerely speaking, none of them is seeking the welfare of its members like GNAT is doing.”

Competition

Mr Gomey gave the assurance when he addressed participants in a quiz competition for junior high school (JHS) pupils in the Akuse Circuit. It was organised by the local GNAT office at Akuse in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region. The participating schools were the Holy Family, Methodist, Presbyterian and Islamic JHSs in the area.

At the end of the four rounds’ competition, the Akuse Islamic Junior High School came tops with 38.5 points, followed by Akuse Holy Family, Akuse Presbyterian and Akuse Methodist JHS with 29, 12, and 11 points respectively.

Prizes were awarded to winners of the first three positions.

Training

Mr Gomey mentioned the Modular course for Certificate “A” Teachers and those with Middle School Leaving Certificate who he said were now holders of Diploma in Basic Education studies certificates.

He announced that GNAT, in collaboration with the Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF), was currently sponsoring female members of the association (GNAT-LAS), who were offering courses in Home Economics, Early Childhood Education, Social Studies, Languages and Gender and Development, to enable them to improve on their output. He, therefore, entreated female teachers in that category to take advantage and upgrade themselves.

“GNAT will continue to do its best to support teachers, since their welfare is our focus as a union,’’ the secretary further indicated.

Commendation

The Akuse local GNAT chairman, Mr Eryfred Sulley, commended teachers in the area for their commitment and hard work in ensuring the successful organisation of the competition.

He said the association would organise more of such programmes to help the pupils improve upon their performances.

The Akuse Circuit Supervisor, Mr S E Etulita, also expressed appreciation for the exercise which he said would promote competition not only among the pupils but the teachers as well.

He further pledged the support of the Ghana Education Service (GES) for such laudable programmes.
