The conference, to be held on the theme: “Education in crisis: Development agenda for 2015 and beyond,” will also discus the global economic crisis and its impact on the education sector.

The National Treasurer of GNAT, Mr Kwame Ofori-Attah, who made that known at a press conference in Accra last Wednesday, said the President, John Dramani Mahama, was expected to officially open the ceremony on January 8, 2014.

Mr Ofori-Atta said panellists including Dr Yaw Baah of the Ghana Technology University College and Madam Mary Armstrong, Vice-President of the American Federation of Teachers would preside over a roundtable discussion, while the keynote address would be delivered by the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei.

According to Mr Ofori-Atta, as part of the conference, elections will be held to select new national officers for the organisation.

He said the National Delegates Conference, which is the highest decision making body of the GNAT, formulated policies for the governance of the organisation.

The General Secretary of the GNAT, Mrs Irene Duncan Adanusah, said the theme was chosen due to the global economic crisis which had affected all countries around the world, including developed ones.

She said the outcry for resources, increment in salaries, access to education, and quality education were the effect of the global crisis, adding that failure of the country to meet some of the targets on education, set under the Millennium Development Goals  (MDGs) was as a result of some of the challenges, hence the need to address them.
