The Birim South District Director of Education, Mrs Diana Caroline Gyimah, has said importance should be attached to Technical and Vocational training to equip individuals to establish their own businesses.

She noted that sometimes the youth who rushed to the cities to seek  non-existing jobs got exposed to various social vices, which, in the long run, landed them in trouble.

Mrs Gyimah, who was inaugurating a girls’ vocational school at Akyem Awisa-Apaaso, urged the students to take their lessons seriously.

A group of 50 members of a Rotary club in Sweden, namely Umea City First Breakfast Rotary Club (UCFFRK), provided the facility.

The education director urged the students to work very hard to pass their National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) examination and even go higher so as not to become a burden on their parents.

She entreated parents to support the students in all aspects of their training so that they could focus on their studies.

Mrs Gyimah appealed to the chiefs and School Management Committee members to practise the culture of maintenance to put the building, materials and equipment provided by the sponsors in good shape and gave an assurance that the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) would supervise and monitor the activities of the school for effective and efficient delivery of teaching and learning.

Mr Samuel Appiah Kubi, Chairman, Ghana Union Sweden, expressed worry about the people’s lukewarm attitude to communal labour and appealed to them to change that attitude.

Mr Appiah Kubi, who is also a Honorary Member of UMEA City Rotary Club in Sweden, took the opportunity to advise the girls to be serious with their studies, assuring them that the UCFFRK would continue to support their education.

Mr Kwasi Ahenkorah-Anti, Secretary of Herald Foundation in Ghana, advised parents to invest their resources in the education of their children rather than on material gains.
