Known as the “Centre for Health System and Policy Research (CHESPOR)”, the centre will provide high level research and training towards the understanding, development and strengthening of the health system.

It also aims at drawing on theoretical insights and empirical evidence regarding health systems, policy analysis, reforms, challenges and strategies that can improve on the sector.

The Deputy Rector of GIMPA, Professor Duku Osei, further explained that the centre would provide four main services in research and development, teaching and training, advisory and consultancy and policy engagement, advocacy and communication.

Partnership

Professor Duku said CHESPOR was actively pursuing collaboration and engaging with partners in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire and other countries to work, share and support the core values of health policy and systems research.

“Networking and collaboration is part of our core values and we intend to extend our engagements to those we consider partners, collaborators and stakeholders in the health sector,” he indicated.

In terms of policy engagement and advocacy, Professor Duku said GIMPA intended to engage with practitioners, policymakers, media, civil service organisations (CSOs), local communities and developing partners in the health sector.

He said the centre would also offer short courses in various disciplines to build quality human resource in the sector.

Advice

The Chair of the GIMPA Council, Dr Christina Amoako, said one of the effective ways to enhance the healthcare services in the country was for stakeholders to team up and work together in finding lasting solutions to the challenges in the sector.

Dr Amoako said the centre, when operated effectively, could accelerate development in the country’s healthcare delivery services.

She commended the management of GIMPA and their collaborators for the initiative.
