'Ghana Writers Awards' extends submissions date

Organisers of the Ghana Writers Awards (GWA), aimed at celebrating and promoting literary writers and literature, has extended the submission of entries for 2017 edition of the awards from May 14 to May 25, 2017.

The extension is to enable writers who did not get the opportunity to enter their works during the required period to do so.

In a statement signed and issued on Tuesday by the Vice President of the Ghana Writers Awards, Mr Kingsley Kojo Antwi said only three out of the five categories advertised earlier for the 2017 edition will be opened to the public during the extension period.

The categories, he said, include poetry, short stories and literature blog.

Below is the full statement from the GWA:

We wish to bring to the notice of the general public, particularly our dear writers that the management of the Ghana Writers Awards (GWA) has extended the date of submissions of the GWA literary contest from May 14 to May 25, 2017.

This follows several pleas on the management of GWA by some members of the public to give them the opportunity to participate in the only nationally competitive literary prize in Ghana.

However, management wishes to state that the extension period will only cover three categories out of the five categories. The categories are Short Stories, Literature Blog and Poetry.

We therefore entreat writers who wish to take part in the second edition of the competition to note that management would not extend the date again or accept late submission of works.

More importantly, writers who wish to take part in the contest must note that the eligibility guidelines for the contest remains unchanged for all the categories mentioned above.

Recall

It will be recalled that the management of the GWA on April 14, 2017 opened submissions for entries into the 2017 edition of the awards. The deadline for the submission of entries was May 14, 2017.

Five categories, including poetry, short story, literature blog, topic-given poetry contest, and spoken word were opened to all Ghanaian unpublished writers, both home and abroad.

The maiden edition of the awards was held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Marvels Ghana Mini Golf Course in Accra in the Greater Accra Region.

Ghana Writers Awards is a literary prize instituted by some young Ghanaian literary compatriots to celebrate and promote Ghanaian writers and literature.
